ABOUT
TERRA.COTTA
Terra.Cotta is a brand that seeks to merge and, above all, honor two ancient forms of craftsmanship, globally recognized and admired: Arraiolos Rugs and Portuguese Tiles.
Portuguese Tiles serve as the inspiration and starting point for our creative journey. Each tile, with its vibrant hand-painted colors and transformative patterns, whispers of time, evoking memories of Sundays spent at grandmother’s house or a stolen kiss at the corner of Lisbon’s old streets. They are works of art that transport us to an era when life was simpler, perhaps even more authentic, inviting us to celebrate the beauty of past traditions in every corner of the present. The intersection of these two art forms emerges in the translation and materialization of these patterns into Arraiolos Rugs or other pieces crafted using the same technique. In a dedicated effort to preserve and revitalize this art, the pieces are embroidered in Arraiolos by the skilled hands of the finest artisans, a labor of love and ancestry. We want to bring the city into our homes. We want to feel Lisbon beneath our feet.
We transform Lisbon's iconic tiles into Arraiolos Rugs, a unique tribute to Portugal's history and traditional art, resulting in original pieces that bring your space to life.
We aim to revitalize these old traditional arts by translating the vibrant patterns of Portuguese Tiles and national architecture icons into Arraiolos Rugs. We work exclusively with Arraiolos carpet makers who painstakingly embroider the distinctive and world-renowned Arraiolos carpets by hand using pure sheep's wool, guaranteeing authentic, high-quality products, respecting the artisanal technique and valuing those who produce it. Each piece can be customized in size or with the development of patterns to meet each client's individual needs, as long as Terra.Cotta's criteria are met.
At Terra.Cotta, we believe that true value lies in pieces that carry the weight of history.
Since the 16th century, the carpet makers of Arraiolos have dedicated themselves to embroidering pure wool carpets by hand, preserving this art, passed down from generation to generation, which transcends decoration. Portuguese Tiles, of Arab origins that were introduced to the country in the 15th century, evolved into vibrant patterns, becoming icons of national architecture. Both celebrate the skill and creativity of the Portuguese people.
